My convertible collar shirt was pretty straightforward except for one thing. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out whether the collar was worn inside the shirt or outside. In that day and age, the pattern company assumed a man wouldn’t need instructions! After considerable online research, I realized that the collar and attached stand were intended to be worn outside the collar band itself. This also explained why the collar stand (again, this is the part attached to the collar and not to the shirt) was cut wider than the band itself.
I live in New York City now, but I am from Vancouver Island, British Columbia — a world away from New York and about as different as two places can be. When I’m not sewing (or drafting patterns) I can usually be found playing with my daughter, who is almost three.

Where do you live?Since 2003 we live in a very rural area, in a small town called Engelskirchen (in Germany).I started to sew in school, in the 60’s there was a lesson called “Handstill” on the schedule – I hated it…it was Fr?ulein Schwarz. We learned handmade sewing (pin-cushions, pot-holders and table runners). She made me redo every stitch and gave me a bad grade at the end. She noted, “You are totally untalented and you would be never a good housewife.”
