Let’s do our sew-along check-in on Sewing Sundays. And because this is an easy pattern, completing it in a month will be very doable, even for those with a super busy schedule. If you’re participating in this month’s sew-along, your assignment this week is to download and assemble the PDF pattern pieces, print out the pattern instructions, and buy your fabric and notions. (To me, the belt is what makes this jacket. So I’m going to buy extra fabric so that I have enough to also make a belt.)

while to go and I have a limited amount of clothing that fits over my HUGE bump I’m going to make a few more maternity items before I get started on the skinny clothes! This week I made up a muslin of Desira using a cotton sheet I bought at the thrift store a few weeks back for $2. I made the alterations I mentioned in last weeks blog post, the top turned out too long so I shortened it by about 4 or 5 inches, I also left off the sleeve cuffs and gave them a binding instead. depression as money was tight and resources to wash clothes were at a minimum. However, times changed, the economy improved and 1920s America reveled in a post-suffrage feminism that viewed the apron as a symbol of domestic restraint. Not to mention that, once WWII was over and domestic machinery production could be re-aimed at consumer spending, the washing machine began to invade every post-war, GI-bill built bungalow from Boston to L.A. (thus making it less necessary to protect one’s clothes with such vigilance).

As a novice I am always impressed by people’s skills when it comes to sewing. Smocking mystifies me, I think it adds so much to an outfit with (what I’ve heard) not too much effort. This smocked fan is absolutely breath taking. It was made in a class by the author’s (Liesl Gibson of Disdressed and Oliver+S) grandmother. Someone left a comment directing people to this Etsy store full of smocked jewelry.
it Never store in heat such as an un-insulated attic The fastest way to throw your investment down the drain is storeitems in intense heat While that may kill certain critters it also kills your clothes especiallyfur Do not store in plastic bags-ever How many times have I found abeautiful suit from the 1940sin someone’s attic only to have the plastic bag melded to the disintegrated buttons Aaacck Case closed An air Ionizer works great at getting odors out of otherwise clean clothing?
Each time I look at the quilt I am inspired again by the unconditional love of Faye Evelyn Taylor. It is so beautiful and has touched many other people too. They may think it is beautiful because of the stitching or because it is a ballerina or because of the amazing fabrics but I know it is because it was made out of PURE LOVE.
