I can remember getting home from a trip downtown one day and realizing I had forgotten to buy the item I had originally gone for. Instead I had been seduced and sidetracked by other more colorful and interesting prospects: zippers, flowers, studded trims, feathered trims, jeweled trims, laces, beads, velvets, colored hooks and eyes, grommeted trims. It’s like being a kid in a candy store! As a tip, I would advise you to always remember to bring your list.

Sewing is necessary for my survival— and not in a specialized, esoteric sense that only fellow seamstresses can really understand, but in a makes-me-money-so-that-I-can-eat sense. During college and my first year of marriage I was fortunate enough to be able to submit my pieces to obliging boutiques for a bit of supplementary income, but was never required to make it my bread and butter. After a stint in Africa, my husband and I came back to Portland and a tough job market that drove me, after papering the streets of downtown with my impressively perky resumes and receiving nary a bite, to sew in earnest. I lobbed wads of my clothing at every boutique I came across, and in the cutthroat fashion climate of Portland, I was fortunate to eventually worm my clothing into three stores. In the mean time I set up shop on Etsy.com, and the rest is history!

The first thing I made was clothes for my cat when I was eight years old. She used to make horrendous noises and walk backwards to try and get away from my creation but I’d just think that maybe it needed something extra, maybe a bonnet. I come from a very creative family, my mother is a seamstress by trade and she was always either sewing, knitting or crocheting and my father was an avid painter. I have always been creative and into making things but it kind of took a backwards step and everyday life took over, until that is I was given a sewing machine for Christmas 2007 by my beloved husband and soon after I discovered BurdaStyle and I’ve been hooked ever since.
