2. How did you start sewing? What’s your favorite project in your BurdaStyle studio?My favourite project is Marlène in the 50s, the dress I made for the party through the decades competition. I was pretty amazed with the result! When my Grandma gave me her white dress, I wondered what could I make with it, and I came up with that project. And a few weeks later, the competition started! A great coincidence!

My favorite thing about sewing is the brainstorming stage, from figuring out designs to finding the right fabric. Thinking of new ideas is the easiest part for me, my head is always overflowing with designs to try. I also love it when I am finished with a piece and try it on, that is the most rewarding experience.
So, last year, I asked for a sewing machine for my birthday and the first thing I made was a simple gray linen bag that I use when I travel. I was quite pleased with the result so I decided to make something hardier: a real outfit. I bought sewing books, discovered BurdaStyle, saw amazing creations of the other members, downloaded beautiful patterns, made a lot of horrible things, learned from my mistakes and now I have begun to sew some clothes that I’m not ashamed of!

Silk and linen blends work wonderfully for garment sewing. They have a beautiful texture (with the little slubs in the fabric) and a nice luster. They also have great body (meaning not a lot of drape) which make them perfect for sewing full or pleated skirts and boxy jackets. Like shirtings, though, they are more expensive and difficult to find. Silk and linen blends also bring the risk of seam slippage.
In terms of fashion, I’m of course addicted to Burdastyle. I’m also loving independent pattern designers like Colette (I have to make that macaroon dress, it is classic!), Victory Patterns, and Salme Sewing Patterns.
